Hero of the Soviet Union

Post  OptimusGonzo on Fri Oct 05, 2007 6:57 pm

To the Hero of the Soviet Union Zaytsev Vasily, who buried in Stalingrad more than 300 fascists.

Whose your favorite hero of the Soviet Union and why? I might do a similar thread for Congressional Medal of Honor winners.

From the great wikipedia

  • In a restaurant:

― Why the meatballs are of cubic shape?― Perestroika!
― Why are they undercooked?― Uskoreniye!
― Why are they bitten?― Gospriyomka
― Why are you telling me all this so brazenly?― Glasnost!

Before Patton, Before Rommel, Before Mongomery, There was Zhukov, and he was the first to use armor to kick butt. He wouldn't be the last. oh btw I found some interesting documents about him wanting to preemptively attack germany in WWII. scary stuff.

well, at first I couldn't find anything, and then I found what wikipedia had listed about the subject, and it had this to say, along with three articles it cited it from, so it MIGHT be true

Official sources, only made available recently, reveal that Zhukov and
his colleagues had been planning a (pre-emptive) strike against Germany
in 1941. A proposal from May 15, 1941[9],
widely discussed amongst Russian historians, was first revealed by Hero
of the Soviet Union V. V. Karpov, who had access to secret archives. He
probably intended to show Zhukov as a military genius, who in the
decisive moment had suggested a surprise attack on the enemy. Viktor Suvorov has used the plan to support his thesis and Mikhail Meltyukhov et al. have studied the background, reaching wider conclusions.[10][11]The
Memorandum was supposedly presented to Stalin by Commissar of Defense
S. Timoshenko and Chief of the General Staff G. Zhukov.

lawl, thats awesome. except that no, I don't live in O Fallon. If you type O Fallon into frapper oranother mapping program, it comes up with a place in China. but yes
that *appears* to be my IP, as well as the IP for literally a thousand other computers at my school, so its not like I'm shakin in my boots here. Although my brother did change our network IP recently, so I cant say that that is it.

the region where i live (Romagna) is famous in italy for its internal strives. during the middle age italian free towns were split in two partie: one closer to the pope, the other closer to the holy roman emperor. in Romagna we had Bologna, Faenza and Rimini of the pro-pope party, Forl' of the pro-emperor party. that's how it begun... there were also some wars, and Forlėmanaged to fend off its opponents, and for its valor had the honor to bear as the town flag the imperial eagle (though with only one head, instead of two heads of the original imperial flag)
